On Wednesday, December 27, RIA Novosti, citing an unnamed source “well acquainted with the situation,” reported that Rosselkhoznadzor plans to introduce a temporary ban on the transit of all types of poultry products from the United States to Kazakhstan through the territory of the Russian Federation.
The agency justifies the need for restrictions on the rapid spread of an aggressive form of highly pathogenic avian influenza in the United States and European countries. According to the agency's interlocutor, last year the volume of transit supplies of American poultry meat through Russia to Kazakhstan amounted to 23 thousand tons, and this year - 15 thousand tons.
The current situation with highly pathogenic avian influenza in the United States is regarded as unstable, the expert noted. According to the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH), since the beginning of the year, 290 cases of this disease have been registered in poultry and wild fauna in the country.
Last year, the number of outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza in 41 European countries reached 9,000. As a result, 69 million domestic livestock were destroyed. In the fall, outbreaks were recorded on farms in the USA, Romania, Bulgaria and Mexico. The virus has crossed the interspecies barrier. There is information about the infection and death of marine mammals in Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay.
