The pig population in Russia as of the end of May of this year increased by 2.3% compared to the same period in 2023 and reached 29.4 million heads. At the same time, the growth rate of the number of these animals in agricultural organizations is even higher - 3.2%, as follows from Rosstat materials.

The number of cattle continues to decline, both in agricultural organizations and throughout the country. At the end of May, there were a total of 17.6 million heads of cattle in the Russian Federation - 3.1% less than at the end of May 2023.

The number of small ruminants is also declining. In total, at the end of May there were 21.7 million heads of sheep and goats in the country. This is 3.5% less than a year earlier.

At the same time, there is an increase in the number of poultry in agricultural organizations by 1%.

“In the structure of the livestock population, households accounted for 38.8% of cattle, 6.2% of pigs, 44.2% of sheep and goats,” says the report of the statistical agency.
