In Russia, it is planned to create a cryobank of microorganisms that inhabit the intestines of animals. This project is being implemented by the All-Russian State Center for Quality and Standardization of Medicines for Animals and Feed (FSBI “VGNKI” of Rosselkhoznadzor) with the aim of preserving microbial communities that play an important role in protecting the body from pathogens.

Microorganisms that live in the intestines of animals are of key importance for the prevention and treatment of microbiome-associated infectious and non-infectious diseases. Among such diseases that are closely related to an imbalance in the bacterial flora of animals are salmonellosis, colibacillosis, campylobacteriosis and clostridiosis. Disturbances in the bacterial diversity and function of the gut microbiota can lead to decreased gut immunity and increased susceptibility to pathogenic bacteria.

The creation of a cryobank of microbiomes will make it possible to use them as a natural resource for the production of medicines and feed additives aimed at maintaining the health of microbiomes and preventing microbiome-associated diseases in animals and poultry. The cryobank has modern equipment that can accommodate up to 15 thousand cryovials, which will be stored at extremely low temperatures from -150 to -196 °C.

This provides optimal conditions for long-term storage of biomaterials and opens up new prospects for scientific research in the field of veterinary medicine and animal husbandry. The creation of a cryobank of animal intestinal microorganisms is an important step in preserving animal biodiversity and health, as well as in the development of innovative methods for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with microbiomes.
