The turkey farming industry of modern Russia demonstrates high results in a number of areas: production has increased by more than 19 times, consumption by 5.3 times, exports by 77 times, and the level of self-sufficiency in hatching eggs has reached 55%. The head of the Center for Industry Expertise of Rosselkhozbank, Oleg Knyazkov, spoke about the achievements and prospects of the area.
Production
Turkey meat production in Russia has shown steady growth throughout time - since its actual inception in the mid-2000s. So, for the period from 2006 to 2023. the figure increased from 22 to 422 thousand tons. This is an increase of 19.2 times.
The industry leaders are Damate Group of Companies with a market share of 56.8% and Cherkizovo Group of Companies, which owns 13.5%.
The results of 2023 are far from the limit. An increase to 440 thousand tons is predicted for 2024, reaching half a million in 2025. The expected breakthrough next year is associated with the launch of new production sites that have already been established in a number of regions. And by the end of 2030, according to RSHB expectations, the industry will approach 700 thousand tons of output.
Consumption
Due to its dietary and hypoallergenic properties, as well as due to the increase in available supply, turkey is gaining consumer love at an accelerated pace. For example, from 2012 to 2023. In the Russian diet there is 5.3 times more turkey – 2.75 kg per year. It is noteworthy that if during the period under review, meat consumption increased at a moderate pace - by 1% per year, then in the turkey segment this average annual increase is 25%.
Export
Along with actively meeting the needs of Russians, domestic manufacturers are energetically supplying surplus products to foreign markets, where, thanks to high quality, effective demand, convenient logistics and thoughtful marketing, they have been able to achieve impressive results. So, in 2015-2023. exports of meat and turkey meat products from Russia increased from 0.35 to 25.6 thousand tons, that is, 77 times.
“Already today, Russian turkey is a leader in the turkey markets of China with a share of 80%, Saudi Arabia with a share of 54%, the UAE - 37%, and in total exports go to 36 countries. At the same time, the domestic market remains an absolute priority: for example, in 2023, external supplies accounted for only 6% of production,” said Oleg Knyazkov.
Hatching egg
One of the most significant successes of the industry was the increase in the production of hatching eggs by almost 50% in a year and by 90% in two years. This dynamics has made it possible to significantly increase the independence of domestic turkey farming from supplies from abroad and strengthen biosecurity. The production of hatching eggs at the end of 2023 amounted to 28.2 million.
The efficient operation of the Donskaya Turkey complex, which last year bred more than 1.7 million day-old turkey poults for producers who do not have their own incubation facilities, has been a good help for the industry. The company plans to launch its own parent stock.
Now the industry’s goal is to increase self-sufficiency from 55% to 80% by the end of 2026, noted Oleg Knyazkov.
Results and growth points
“Russian turkey farming demonstrates the sustainability of production, satisfying growing consumer demand and expanding export supplies. Over the past two years, our producers have made a powerful breakthrough and brought our country to 2nd place in the world in terms of turkey production after the United States: we have moved Germany from this position, while we managed to surpass such giants as Poland, Spain and France even earlier . I believe that every year Russia’s leadership position will only strengthen,” said Oleg Knyazkov.
The expert estimated investment opportunities in industry projects in the coming years at 44 billion rubles - they could increase production output by 110 thousand tons, and hatching eggs by 6 million.
As growth points, the analyst listed work on selection and genetics, infrastructure for storage, freezing of products, pharmaceuticals for veterinary medicine, reengineering of technological equipment for housing and meat processing.
