Director of the FAO office for communication with the Russian Federation Oleg Kobyakov noted that in the country, according to data for 2019, the proportion of the population experiencing chronic hunger was less than 2%
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) believes that Russia is not in danger of starvation. This was announced at a press conference in TASS by the director of the FAO office for communication with the Russian Federation, Oleg Kobyakov.
"We are convinced that Russia is not in danger of starvation," he said.
Kobyakov noted that in Russia, according to 2019 data, the proportion of the population experiencing chronic hunger was less than 2%. This, in his opinion, is practically within the limits of statistical error. Up to 6% of the population periodically experienced food insecurity. "If we compare these figures with world indicators, we will see that Russia in this regard is a well-fed, prosperous country that has historically overcome hunger," Kobyakov said.
He noted that in any, even the richest country in the world, there are starving people. For example, in the United States their number reaches 5 million people.
Kobyakov recalled that in Russia the relevant statistics are kept by Rosstat and Rospotrebnadzor.
