For 7 months of 2020, the export of Russian pork reached a record level of 62 thousand tons.
The main importing countries were Kazakhstan Belarus, Ukraine, Mongolia, Vietnam and Hong Kong. As a reminder, back in 2012–2013, Russia was one of the largest importers of pork, then over 1.25 million tons of this type of meat were imported. Thanks to the measures of state support, the pig industry was able to modernize outdated enterprises and increase the production of pork, which was not inferior in quality to the products of the world's leading manufacturers.
In just a few yearsRussia has not only fully met the domestic demand for pork products and overcame its dependence on imports, but by 2019 it has become a net exporter of pork.
At present, Russia is actively expanding new export markets. In 2019, deliveries of Russian pork to Hong Kong and Vietnam began, which was an important event for the livestock industry. The development of Asian markets is a priority task for the Russian Federation and a great prospect for increasing pork exports. The spread of coronavirus contributes to the strengthening of the position of the Russian Federation in the food markets of Asia, where the supply of pork from the USA and Europe may be seriously reduced due to the forced reduction in production. Russian pork products can become a competitive and worthy alternative to meet increased consumer demand.
