The Gambia intends to buy poultry meat from the Belgorod company. During a visit to the Belgorod region, the Gambian delegation held talks on this issue with the local company Yasnye Zori, TASS reported.
“The issue that was raised at the meeting was the organization of supplies of poultry meat to the Yasnye Zori company in the Gambia. We are currently importing large quantities of poultry meat from various countries such as the US and Poland. We believe that it is possible to diversify the geography of suppliers. It would be good for our country,” Hassan Jallow, Permanent Secretary of the Gambian Ministry of Agriculture, told the agency.
It is noted that about 2.3 million people live in the Gambia, of which 90% are Muslims, so the most popular in the country is poultry meat. According to Hassan Jallow, the Gambia wants to import Russian poultry meat not only for its own consumption, but also to create a hub for selling products to West African states, where there are more than 420 million consumers.
Africa now has a population of over 1.3 billion. Of these, 10% (more than 100 million people) are the so-called middle class. “That is, almost the entire population of Russia is the middle class of Africa. And they eat quite a bit, at least for now. By 2050 there will be 2.5 billion people in Africa. I think that the economy will grow there and the road infrastructure will develop. Therefore, Africa will consume a lot of protein, ”Sergey Yushin, head of the National Meat Association, said in an interview with Veterinary Medicine and Life. He believes that Russian meat exporters need to increase the supply of their products to this continent. At present, meat consumption in Africa barely reaches 30 kg per person per year, but the level of consumption will grow, the speaker is sure.
However, he drew attention to the difficulties that exporters may face. “This is a different culture, a different culture of international trade, this is a very complex infrastructure, and somewhere it is completely absent,” said the head of the association.
