Omsk scientists have created a new breed of meat and egg quail - Omsk. This is the first domestic quail cross in the post-Soviet space.
Breeders from Siberia have something to be proud of. The last breed of quail in the Soviet Union was bred in Estonia back in the seventies. For several decades, Russian farmers have been forced to buy breeding products abroad, in fact subsidizing the development of breeding poultry farming in other countries.
Specialists of the Siberian Research Institute of Poultry Farming have been working on the creation of their own cross for more than ten years. Scientists managed to obtain a unique genotype included in the state register of breeding achievements.
The Omskaya quail combines the best qualities from meat and egg breeds, - Andrey Dymkov, director of the SibNIIP, a branch of the Omsk ANC, told RG. “This is a very productive bird. She reaches a live weight of 240-270 grams already at 42 days and brings about 270 eggs per year of life. Each year, one quail can give three to four generations.
