In 2023, turkey meat production in the Russian Federation increased by 1.8%, amounting to 422,000 tons. These data were published by the consulting agency AGRIFUD Strategies, which compiled an annual rating of Russian turkey producers based on information from companies in this industry, statistics from the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation and information from the National Association of Turkey Producers (NAPI).
Despite the slight increase in production, this helped to partially offset the decline in broiler meat production that was noted in the second half of last year. It's important to note that turkey prices have not increased as much as other meats, despite significant increases in production costs.
This indicates the growing popularity of turkey meat among Russian consumers, who see it not only as a healthy and dietary food, but also as an affordable source of animal protein with a variety of cooking methods.
One of the leading companies in the industry was the Damate group of companies, which increased its market share to 55.5% and increased production volumes thanks to improved efficiency and a slight expansion of capacity. The second largest producer, Cherkizovo Group of Companies, reduced production by 30% due to the transfer of part of its assets to growing broilers.
Three interesting events also occurred last year. Soyuzpromptitsa LLC acquired the assets of the Poultry Farming Complex named after. M. Gafuri in Bashkiria, which led to an increase in production volumes by 15%. Agro-Plus from the Stavropol Territory successfully recovered from quarantine and reached full production capacity. The Ak Bars company is restoring the assets of the bankrupt Zalesnoye in Tatarstan.
It is also worth noting the increase in production volumes at the Yegoryevsk poultry farm, the Yuzhny poultry complex and the Orenburg Vostochnaya-Agro. All of these companies noted growth due to expanded product ranges and increased sales in the retail and food service sectors.
The total market share of the top 5 Russian turkey producers was 83.5%. Despite the high concentration of the market, even small regional companies continue to grow due to expanded product ranges and increased sales.
The industry has achieved impressive success, especially with growth in hatching egg production up almost 50% year-on-year and 90% over the past two years. This positive trend has significantly reduced the dependence of Russian turkey farming on imports and increased the level of its biosecurity.
The 2nd order breeder "Breeding Turkey" in the Tyumen region intends to double its production capacity to over 10 million eggs this year.
The successful operation of the Don Turkey complex last year was an important support for the industry, as it produced more than 1.7 million young turkeys for producers without their own incubators. The company also plans to create its own poultry stock.
According to forecasts by AGRIFUD Strategy and the National Association of Turkey Poultry Farmers, in 2024, the production of turkey products in Russia will increase by at least 5%, and in 2025, with the commissioning of new production sites in several regions of the country, an even more significant breakthrough will be made.
Further development of the industry will be stimulated by growing consumer demand for turkey meat and product exports. Russia is already the leading supplier of turkey meat to the markets of China (80%), Saudi Arabia (56%) and the United Arab Emirates (82%). In total, Russian turkey meat and its processed products are supplied to 29 countries around the world.
Taking into account the constant growth of domestic consumption and export supplies, AGRIFUD Strategies confirm their forecasts to achieve turkey meat production in Russia of at least 600–650 thousand tons by 2030.
