Sanctions against Russia threaten catastrophic consequences for the global food sector. This was stated by Secretary of the Security Council (SC) of the Russian Federation Nikolai Patrushev at a meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa, of high representatives of the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa).

The Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation noted that, according to the UN, there is currently no acute shortage of food.

"The situation is aggravated by the unprecedented sanctions war being waged against Russia, which threatens with catastrophic consequences for the global food sector," said Patrushev, quoted by Rossiyskaya Gazeta.

According to the Secretary of the Security Council, the measures of sanctions pressure against Russia "led to an imbalance in the international food market, provoking, in particular, significant price fluctuations."

"It is hardly possible to restore the normal functioning of supply chains and solve other problems related to ensuring global food security until the illegitimate obstacles artificially created by the West that Russian economic operators face are eliminated," Patrushev emphasized.

"I would like to draw your attention to the fact that, despite all the difficulties created by the West, more than 12 million tons of grain were sent from Russia to Africa," the Russian Security Council Secretary said, addressing his BRICS colleagues.
