As of May 1, 2024, there were 7.5 million head of cows on Russian farms of all categories. This is 224 thousand heads (2.6%) less than a year earlier. This was reported by the Milknews analytical center.
In agricultural enterprises, the figure decreased by 2.9% (93 thousand heads) - to 3.1 million heads. Similar statistics are observed in household farms, where livestock numbers decreased from 3.1 to 3 million heads. The reduction affected primarily the Bryansk (-19 thousand), Smolensk (-14 thousand), Belgorod (-9 thousand), Novosibirsk (-7 thousand) and Voronezh (-5 thousand) regions.
In January-March 2024, Russia produced 6.1 million tons of commercial milk (+3.4% year-on-year). Of these, 5 million tons are in agricultural organizations (+4.5% year on year). Gross production in farms of all categories reached 7.5 million tons (+2.2% year on year). According to Rosstat, in 2023 milk production increased by 2.5%, to 33.8 million tons. In 2024, production could increase by 360 thousand tons thanks to new farms.
The maximum amount of compensation for the construction of dairy farms has been increased to 30%, and for their modernization - to 50%. (RF Government Decree No. 630 of May 22, 2024).
As part of the modernization of dairy farms, the costs of purchasing and commissioning machinery and equipment are reimbursed in order to expand their production capacity.
The reduction in the number of cows with a simultaneous increase in milk production has several reasons:
An increase in animal productivity against the background of the introduction of advanced technologies and an increase in the concentration of livestock in large farms.
Change in production structure. The share of less profitable and productive small and medium-sized enterprises is declining.
The economy of dairy production is supported by the reduction in the cost of feed and mineral fertilizers.
