The World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) has confirmed the outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza in southern Ukraine.

Evaluations performed by the Odessa Regional State Laboratory indicate that, despite the absence of clinical signs, the H5 subgroup of highly pathogenic avian influenza was isolated from backyard poultry using PCR.

Following this outbreak, surveillance zones have been established within a radius of three and ten kilometers.

According to Ukrainian officials, there are no poultry farms within a 10-kilometer radius of the outbreak, and the source of the outbreak has not yet been identified.

Ukrainian veterinary officials have stated that measures such as controlling traffic, tightening surveillance in the affected areas, tracking products, zoning, and disinfection are on the agenda.

It should be noted that the use of vaccines to control this disease is prohibited in Ukraine.

The rapid and widespread outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza in Europe has raised concerns among poultry industry activists on the continent.
