From January 1 to June 28 this year, the Russian Federation imported 9,738.83 tons of pork within the duty-free quota, Interfax was told in the press service of the Federal Customs Service. The meat was supplied from Brazil and Chile.
As reported, the quota for duty-free import of pork was set at 100,000 tons. The decision on such volumes of imports, at the proposal of the Ministry of Agriculture, was adopted by the EEC Council on November 12, 2021. The introduction of this measure from January 1 this year, the department explained the need to stabilize the price situation in the meat market and provide the processing industry with raw materials. Imported meat was intended only for processing. Its intended use was confirmed by the Ministry of Agriculture.
This measure ended on June 30th.
As the head of the National Meat Association (NMA) Sergei Yushin told Interfax earlier, the fact that the quota remained practically unclaimed confirmed that the decision to introduce it against the backdrop of forecasts for an increase in domestic pork production was absolutely unreasonable. "It was obvious, and this was confirmed by the plans of our producers, that in 2022 the volume of production would grow at a high pace. This was confirmed by the first months of this year, when production increased by more than 5%," he said.
In general, by the end of the year, production growth may reach 5-6%, Yushin predicts.
