The measures taken by the Russian authorities aimed at curbing the rise in prices for pork and beef may turn into a conflict between Russian producers and foreign suppliers of these products. This was stated by the professor of the basic department of trade policy of the PRUE. G.V. Plekhanov Ibragim Ramazanov. So he commented on the information that the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation proposed to abolish the duty on the import of meat.

The Russian government runs the risk of harming the pig industry

“The measures proposed by the Ministry of Agriculture can be considered one of the methods to stabilize prices in the short term. However, in the long term, they can lead to a conflict of interests between Russian producers and foreign suppliers of these products, - Ramazanov said. - The elimination of import duties for a long period, especially on pork, for the production of which Russia has sufficient internal resources, may lead to a drop in the efficiency of this industry. Most likely, the Russian government will treat such a proposal with great caution."

In addition, as Ramazanov explained, at present, when the shortage and high prices for energy have significantly increased the cost of agricultural products around the world, including meat, it is very difficult to compensate for the shortage of these products only through low import duties.
