In the first seven months of 2022, the poultry meat market in Russia in slaughter weight grew to 2.684 million tons, which is 4% (+94 thousand tons) more than in the reporting period in 2021. The indicators include the volume of imports and production of poultry meat in the Russian Federation, excluding exports.
Poultry production leads the Russian meat market
Agricultural organizations in Russia in January-August 2022 released 8.4 million tons of livestock and poultry for slaughter in live weight, where the share of poultry was 51%. According to Emeat, in the first seven months of 2022, 5.4% more poultry meat in live weight was produced than in the same period in 2021 - 4.3 million tons. Indicators for pork increased by 41%, for cattle - by 7.8%, for lamb and goat meat - by 0.2%. In total, the country produced 5.5% more meat year on year.
Import and export of poultry meat
Poultry meat exports from the Russian Federation in the first quarter of 2022, according to Finmarket, increased by more than 50% compared to January-March 2021. Russian suppliers import about 30% of the total volume of deliveries to China. This value has decreased compared to the share of exports to China in 2020-2021, falling by 20%. Other importers of Russian poultry meat are the countries of the Persian Gulf, including Saudi Arabia, the countries of Africa and Southeast Asia.
According to the National Poultry Union, domestic poultry exports have been growing since the beginning of the second quarter of 2022. Export growth in April of this year amounted to 20% compared to the same month in 2021.
In the first month of 2022, poultry meat imports into the country increased by 13.8% compared to the same indicator in January 2021. The volume of imports of the product amounted to 13.8 thousand tons, according to a report to the Federal Customs Service of Russia.
Russia increased indicators for eggs
Domestic poultry farms produced 24.7 billion chicken eggs in January-August. The result exceeded the volumes for the same period of time in 2021 by 2.7% (649 million units). The volume of egg production in August increased by 2.6% year-on-year (+79 million eggs) and amounted to 3.175 billion eggs.
From January to August, most eggs were produced in the Southern, Siberian, Central, Far Eastern and Volga federal districts. According to Finmarket estimates, in 2021 the share of the largest poultry farms in total production was 27%. Among such enterprises, among others, were the Sinyavinskaya, Roskar, Volzhanin and Sverdlovskaya poultry farms.
The egg production of one laying hen on average from January to August of this year is 210 eggs, which is 0.5% more than the same period in 2021. In August 2022, the average egg production of a laying hen in agricultural organizations was 27 eggs. The highest values, according to Emeat, were recorded in the Siberian Federal District, where an average of 221 eggs were laid in hens during the reporting period.
In 2021, the consumption of eggs in Russia per person increased to 287 pieces. Growth against the previous year was 1.4%. The average price of eggs from producers in 2021 reached 56.1 rubles, which is 28.7% of the cost of the product in 2020. Consumer prices increased on average by 15.8%, amounting to 87.8 rubles.
Expert forecasts for the Russian egg market
Rosptitsesoyuz believes that according to the results of 2022, the volume of egg production in the Russian Federation will be 45 billion pieces against 44.9 billion pieces in 2021. In 2022, egg consumption is expected to drop to 287 eggs per person, while in 2021 this figure was 288 eggs. Domestic egg production, the union believes, may increase to 45.5 billion eggs by 2030, while consumption will rise to 293 eggs per person per year.
