The bill which aims to ban the use of antimicrobial drugs and antibiotics in animal feed without a veterinary prescription was adopted by the Russian State Duma during its third, final reading at a plenary session on December 17, 2021.
An explanatory note reads that a medicated feed containing antimicrobials may only be sold with a veterinary prescription provided that the manufacturer has a license to produce pharmaceutical drugs. This move is necessary to combat antimicrobial resistance.
It is planned that the veterinary prescriptions for animal drugs will be issued via the federal electronic veterinary information system VetIS of Rosselkhoznadzor.
Prescription drug list including antimicrobials, as well as prescription requirements and drug prescription forms will be approved in the near future.
The federal legislation «On Veterinary Medicine» and «On Circulation of Medicinal Drugs» will be amended. The amendments will enter into force on March 1, 2023.
As a reminder, the bill was submitted to the State Duma by the Russian government in August this year.
