Turkey has become the world's eighth largest producer with about 2 million tons of poultry meat production in 2016.A total of 89.5 million tons of poultry meat (except for feet) were produced in the world by the end of 2016 according to data compiled by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of United Nations and Turkish Poultry Meat Producers and Breeders Association (BESD-BİR).
The US is the largest poultry meat producer with 18.3 million tons, corresponding to 20.4 per cent of world poultry meat production, followed by Brazil with 13.6 million tons, China with 12.7 million tons, European Union with 11 million tons, India with 4.2 million tons, Russia with 3.8 million tons, Mexico with 3.3 million tons and Argentina with 2.1 million tons.
Turkey has become the world's eighth largest producer with about 2 million tons of poultry meat production, followed by Thailand with 1.8 million tons and Indonesia with 1.6 million tons.
Poultry meat production in Turkey, which was 162,569 tons in 1990, reached 662,096 tons in 2000, 1.4 million tons in 2010 and close to 2 million tons at the end of 2016, increasing by a factor of 12 from 1990-2016 and by a factor of 3 from 2000-2016.
Turkey meat production, which was 500 tons in 1990, was 23,265 tons in 2000, 33,000 tons in 2010 and 50,500 tons at the end of 2016. Village and laying hens and other poultry meat production reached 93,500 tons at the end of 2016.
Poultry meat consumption per capita in Turkey, which was 2.87 kilograms in 1990, increased to 5.02 kilograms in 1995, 9.74 kilograms in 2000, 13.61 kilograms in 2005, and 17.82 kilograms in 2010. Poultry meat production per capita was calculated as 21.94 kilograms by the end of 2016.
On the other hand, turkey meat consumption, which was around 0.01 kilograms in 1990, reached 0.34 kilograms in 2000, 0.63 kilograms in 2015 and 0.56 kilograms in 2016. Village and laying hens and other poultry consumption was 0.74 kilograms last year.
Poultry meat consumption per capita in Turkey was 23.24 kilograms in 2016.
