The Ural Federal Agrarian Research Center of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences plans to conduct an experiment to obtain offspring from the first genetically edited cow. The calf was bred in January of this year by blocking the gene for adherence to leukemia, which most often affects cattle.
“The calf is healthy, growing, everything is in order. For now, we're just watching. This is a girl, if everything goes well, then we will try [to get offspring], we will evaluate how all this processing (genome editing) has affected reproductive qualities. Well, let's see how much milk she will give and what quality the milk is. But it’s still too early for her age, she is less than a year old, ”said Anna Krivonogova, leading researcher at the center, Doctor of Biological Sciences (TASS quote).
Earlier it was reported that in the end, scientists intend to breed a hornless cow that will not suffer from leukemia, and its milk can be given to allergy sufferers.
