Brazilian exports of pork between January and August this year totalled 340,800 tons. The number, according to surveys of the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA) is 4.4 per cent higher than in the same period of 2014, when 326,500 tons were shipped.

With this performance, Brazilian pork exporters obtained revenues of $826.6 million, 16.6 per cent lower than the number recorded in the same comparative period last year.

"The accumulated surplus for the year was driven by the strong pace of shipments made in August. The flow must be maintained throughout the second half, confirming the forecast for 2015 ABPA high in volumes shipped," said the chief executive of ABPA, Francisco Turra.

In the month of August, 50,100 tons of pork were exported, 16.1 per cent higher than the balance achieved in August 2014.

In terms of revenue, there was a decrease of 19.7 per cent, totaling US$ 115.5 million.

Russia remains the dominant importer of Brazilian pork, importing 153,800 tons between January and August, 36.8 per cent higher than the total achieved in the first eight months of last year.

"All indicators show that shipments to Russia should keep pace, offsetting reductions identified in exports of certain markets, the example of Hong Kong," said Rui Eduardo Vargas Saldanha, vice president of pigs of ABPA.

Exports to Hong Kong registered 72,200 tons between January and August this year, 2.2 per cent lower compared to the same period last year.
