Trade talks around the world show few signs of progress

Trade talks around the globe are in disarray with prospects of a farm deal between the EU and the Mercosur bloc under threat and little progress made following further NAFTA discussions. Reuters reported this week that a number of EU nations, led by France and Ireland, have proposed postponing a farm trade offer to South America’s Mercosur bloc until rules are agree to avoid unfair competition. Eastern Europe faces disease risk, warns FAO

Eastern Europe and the Balkans risk outbreaks of a deadly cattle disease if they fail to step up cow vaccinations, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). FAO has called for broader cattle vaccination to keep lumpy skin disease at bay in Eastern Europe and the Balkans, especially in areas where the risk is the highest. In a position paper published this week,FAOwarned that even countries that have not been affected by lumpy skin disease so far but are considered at risk need to carry out risk-based vaccination to avert the spread of the disease, which can have devastating consequences for farmers,. EU poultry sector missing out says AVEC

European poultry processors have criticised the European Commission’s trade liberalisation plans for third countries saying it is threatening the sector, which employs more than 300,000 people. The Association of Poultry Processors and Poultry Trade in EU countries (AVEC) said EU companies had to comply with very high standards on animal welfare, food safety and environmental protection, which led to extra costs being incurred compared to third countries. But AVEC said the EU Commission was engaged in free trade negotiations with several parties – negotiations which were intended to further liberalise trade by reducing or abolishing. Read more...

Broiler prices across the globe are showing strong signs of recovery after a ‘perfect storm’ of market disruption caused by avian influenza and the Brazilian ‘weak flesh’ scandal. Russia’s key pig region commits to quality standards

Pig farms in Russia’s key pig region Belgorod have signed a joint commitment to stop using all kinds of growth promoters, hormones and ‘strong’ antibiotics in pig feeding as from 1 January 2018.That was communicated by Tatiana Ayusheva, head of the regional branch of the Russian veterinary body Rosselkhoznadzor, in a statement early September. Ms Ayusheva didn’t mention names of specific pig producers that confirmed to stick to these quality standards, but she made it clear that the list does include major companies.
