According to data released by the Russian Unified Interdepartmental Statistical Information System (EMISS), pig feed cost 12,437 roubles (US$220) per tonne, 10.4% down when compared to December 2016. This is the lowest level registered since the beginning of the current economy crisis in Russia in 2014. The Russian poultry industry has been developing rapidly during the last several years, leading to a significant increase in its poultry meat production and satisfaction of the country's domestic needs for this product. The volume of production of poultry meat in Russia amounted to 4,087.4 thousand tons in slaughter weight (5,561.1 thousand tons in live weight) for the period of January to November 2017. The number of cattle in Ukraine as of 1 February 2018 numbered 3.58 million head, which is 4.5 per cent down year-over-year (y-o-y).In particular, the number of cows was 2.02 million head, which was 3.8 per cent down against the figure as of 1 February 2017, according to the State Statistics Service of Ukraine. The number of pigs as of 1 February 2018 decreased by 8.2 per cent, to 5.9 million, while the number of sheep and goats was 5 per cent down, to 1.29 million head. However, the poultry population increased by 2.5 per cent, to 199.9 million birds.
