Economic measures, rather than an outright ban of backyard farms, may help Russian veterinary authorities to control African Swine Fever (ASF).An outright ban is likely to be contradictory to national Russian legislation, according to Alexander Rondin, president of Russia’s Association of Peasant and Backyard Farmers, in an interview in theRossiyskaya Gazeta, a Russian daily, earlier this month. Cherkizovo Increases Installed Capacity for Production of Mixed Feeds

Cherkizovo Group, Russia's largest vertically integrated meat and feed producer, announced on Friday that it has expanded its mixed feeds production capacity. In Voronezh region, Cherkizovo Group has increased its installed capacity for the production of mixed feeds by adding another line. The new line produces 33 tonnes of mixed feeds per hour. Having commissioned the new line, Cherkizovo Group has strengthened its leadership position on the market. Armenia, FAO Expanding Cooperation in Food Safety, Cattle Breeding

The Armenian agriculture ministry and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) will sign a new agreement to expand their cooperation, Iganti Araqelyan, Armenian agriculture minister, told journalists on Wednesday. Global hunger levels have fallen more than a quarter since 2000, but more recent rising hunger scores of several countries in the 2017 Global Hunger Index (GHI) underline how uneven this progress has been and how precarious it is to maintain. Famine has cast a shadow over four countries in the past year while conflict and climate change continue to hit the poorest the hardest. Vegetable Oils Give Lift to FAO Food Price Index

Global food prices rose slightly in September, as firmer prices of vegetable oils and to a lesser extent dairy products offset declining prices for staple cereal grains. According toFAO, the Food Price Index averaged 178.4 points for the month of September, up 0.8 per cent from August and marking a 4.3 per cent increase from a year earlier. The FAO Food Price Index is a measure of the monthly change in international prices of a basket of food commodities. The FAO Vegetable Oil Price Index increased by 4.6 per cent, driven primarily by palm oil, although values for soy, rapeseed and sunflower oils also rose. Seminars Introduce US Beef to HRI Sector in Kazakhstan Cities

Highlighting well-established cuts of US beef and introducing new cuts expected to be popular, USMEF conducted educational seminars for HRI professionals in Chimkent and Astana, two of the largest cities in Kazakhstan. The seminars, which targeted chefs and meat buyers, were funded by the USDA Market Access Programme (MAP) and the Beef Checkoff Programme.
