Last week, the European pig slaughter market got ever steadier. Most of the countries recorded unchanged quotations in the EU pig price comparison. The supply pressure that had formed over Easter could be sold meanwhile. Thus, the markets got back to being balanced. With just one exception: The Austrians did not yet succeed in freeing themselves from the backlog supply resulting from over the Easter holiday. On top of that, bargain offers from abroad exerted pressure on the domestic market. According to what a French market observer says, the French market seems to be relieved in connection with the German quotation’s sideward movement. Alternatively, the prices. Read more...

The FAO Food Price Index (FFPI) averaged 151.0 points in March 2016, up 1.0 per cent from February, but almost 21 points (12.0 per cent) below its March 2015 level. The main feature last month was the strong rebound in sugar prices, which, combined with a further increase in vegetable oil quotations, more than offset a plunge in dairy values. International prices of the other commodities used in the calculation of the FFPI changed little. The FAOCerealPrice Index averaged 147.6 points in March, down marginally from February, but 13.1 percent less than in March 2015. The latest reports from China suggest that pig prices remain high and there is little sign of demand for imported pork slowing down. The high price level is evidenced by wholesale pork prices, which tend to track pig prices closely. Over the last couple of months, these have fluctuated around 25 yuan/kg (£2.70/kg) and, if anything, have been increasing further in the latest weeks. This would translate into a liveweight pig price of around £2/kg. Prices are now almost 50% higher than a year ago, when they reached a low point of around 17 yuan/kg. Latest figures suggest that, despite the recovery in prices, Chinese sow numbers continue to fall, as many. Read more...
Earlier this week, Dr Derrell Peel at Oklahoma State University published a very timely short article regarding Mexican beef exports to the US, write Steve Meyer and Len Steiner. The Mexican beef industry has changed dramatically in the past 10-15 years, especially the implementation of boxed beef technology and feedlot associated modern packing plants. In late March, SuKarne announced a huge new beef packing plant and feedlot complex was opening in the Mexican state of Durango. This is the newest modern large scale beef processing plant built from the ground-up in North America. This new complex will likely facilitate continued growth in sales of Mexican beef to the. Recently, there has been a renewed focus on concluding bilateral trade agreements globally. In the case of the EU there are two deals currently in the pipeline, the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), and an agreement with Mercosur countries following Argentina recently electing a more business friendly president. The Mercosur counties include six South American nations including Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, Chile and Venezuela which traditionally are big consumers of beef and, as a region, are very active in the global beef market. When beef exports from this region are combined with that from the US, their share of global beef exports amounts to. Read more...
