Pig prices stayed strong as demand for lamb grew in Europe, says QMS

In the week ended April 1st, prime prices for hoggs although reported a slight decrease have remained 30% above year earlier levels, according to Quality Meat Scotland. “Auction market throughputs through March have been well above last years levels, while the UK weekly slaughter of prime sheep has been running well ahead of last year throughout January and February,” said Quality Meat Scotland’s Director of Economics Services. “So despite strong supplies of hogs, farmgate prices have strengthened suggesting a basic strength in demand,” he added. China retaliates with higher import fees on US pork

In China, US pork imports will be struck with an additional import tariff as from this week.The Chinese government decided to levy this extra tax on pork and various other products in response to higher import tariffs on steel and aluminium imposed by US president Trump last week. Apart from pork, also meat, fruit and steel pipes are included in the tariff increase, which in total is a list 128 products. Most tariffs added are about 15%, but according to China’s commerce and finance ministries, the tariffs imposed on pork come down to 25%. US pig production is raising by 3%

The quarterly report on hogs and pigs released by the US Department of Agriculture shows that the inventory of swine totalled 72.9 million head, up 3% from the number registered in the first quarter of 2017. 66.7 million of the hogs and pigs were market ready, a gain of 3 percent over 2017, but down 1 percent from the last quarter, according to the statistics kept by USDA. Iowa reported the largest inventory of hogs and pigs among the states (22.6 million head). North Carolina and Minnesota followed with the second and third largest inventories with 8.90 million and 8.50 million head, respectively. New vaccine efficient both for AI and duck enteritis

The Pirbright institute has developed a vaccine that is efficient both for avian influenza and duck enteritis. The research led by Professor Munir Iqbal at The Pirbright Institute is based on inserting protective avian influenza virus genes into the duck enteritis virus (DEV) vaccine by using a method of CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing that allows higher rates of gene insertion. According to the researchers, the process is therefore more efficient and the resulting vaccine virus is able to protect ducks against both DEV and avian influenza. Miratorg to invest $5 million in expanding its pork production capacity

Russia's largest pork producer Miratorg plans to invest 284 million rubles ($4.95 million) in the expansion of the meat production capacity at its meat processing plant SK Korocha, according to the company's latest statement. Miratorg wants to produce more than 86,000 tons of products in consumer packaging in 2018, which is 7.5% more than in the previous year. In 2017, the Russian company delivered more than 341,000 tons of pork products to the domestic market, including about 60,000 tons of consumer products.
