One of the interesting global factors in the pig industry is what’s going on in Russia, and how this will affect the markets, writes Jim Long President – CEO Genesus Inc. Russia Current market price is 113 rubles a kilogram, or $0.86 USD/lb liveweight (about $215 USD per market hog). A time for recollection and contemplation for the Chinese Pig Industry in the Year of the Chicken, writes Alexander Kovachevich, GM China Area, Genesus Genetics. According to the Chinese Zodiac, 2017 is the Year of the Chicken. While the chicken sign is seen as quite a positive sign, with attributes such as loyalty and persistence, it is commonly said that one’s ‘own year’ (本命年) is a difficult one. When looking at consumers’ consumption habits of protein, we look at three ‘competing’ groups, eggs, chicken meat and pork. High prices for one generally leads to people choosing more of the other. While pork prices have been high for. Read more...

As from mid 2017 the Ukrainian pork market might face a shortage of domestic production. As a result, the country may have to step up pork imports, from e.g. Poland, Canada and Brazil. That was stated by Artur Loza, president of Ukraine’s Pork Producers Association (PPA), to press agency Tass on 10 January. Loza attributed most problems of the pig industry to theAfrican Swine Fever(ASF) epidemic, saying it is not only undermining profitability of pig breeding businesses, but also hampering export opportunities. Prices of major food commodities declined for the fifth year in a row in 2016, averaging 161.6 points for the year as a whole, some 1.5 percent below their 2015 levels. Bumper harvests and prospects for staple cereals offset upward pressure on FAO's Food Price Index from tropical commodities such as sugar and palm oil, where production was impacted by El Nino. In December, the Index averaged nearly 172 points, unchanged from November. The FAO Food Price Index is a trade-weighted index tracking international market prices for five key food commodity groups: major cereals, vegetable oils, dairy, meat and sugar. 2016 was marked by a steady decline in cereal. Cash hogs and futures have held up remarkably well in the face of some of the largest weekly slaughters in history, writes Allan Bentley, USA Sales. Weights for the last week of 2016 were 4 lbs. below last year. That tells me the industry did a great job chewing through the hogs in a timely fashion and pulled hogs forward so as not to get too backed up during the holidays. Of course, as Jim Long likes to remind us, when Packers are making $50 per head they have quite an incentive to kill as many as they can. We have not only held steady prices, but both cash hogs and hog futures have increased in value. Cash hogs have gained $9.00/ cwt in the last 6 weeks.. Read more...
Despite bad market conditions, pork production in Russia has been growing at an unprecedented and uninterrupted pace lately. It is expected that the country will reach self-sufficiency by 2020. Export may not be far off either. Russia’s pork industry is growing very fast, that much is for sure. Estimates for 2016 pointed to a 9.3% year-on-year growth, when compared to 2015. Russia must have produced around 3.39 million tonnes (slaughterweight) in 2016, explains Dr Yuri Kovalev, chairman of Russia’s National Union for Pork Producers (NSS). In the last decade alone, says Kovalev, domestic pork production has doubled. This strong growth is mainly taken care of. Read more...
