International food commodity prices dipped in October, as falling dairy, meat and vegetable oils prices more than offset a surge in sugar prices, the United Nations said today. TheFAO Food Price Index, a measure of the monthly change in international prices of a basket of food commodities, averaged 163.5 points in October, down 0.9 per cent from September and 7.4 per cent below its level a year earlier. Russia has lifted the ban on pork and beef imports from nine Brazilian plants. The market previously closed in December 2017 after the Russian authorities discovered a feed additive that is banned in the country in some shipments. Russia's veterinarian watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor announced on Wednesday that it ended the 11-month ban. The Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA) expects the country's pork exports to increase by 20,000 tonnes this year to 640,000 tonnes, Reuters reports. Russian wheat export prices fell last week due to intensified competition with U.S. wheat for supplies to Egypt, the world’s largest importer and the top buyer of Russian wheat, analysts said. In 2013, according to the current projection, the global halal food market is supposed to reach a value of $1,863 billion, up by 6.1% from the value of $1,303 billion reported last year. Global pork production is expected to increase by 1% in 2019, reaching 114.6 million tons based on the continued expansion in China and in the United States, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) latest forecast shows.
